UNDER THE SUN.

Everybody wants to rule the world- Lorde.

Another week, another media amplified frenzy; great time to pen away my thoughts unto the world wide web…yet again! I’ve been MIA giving room to have so much been swept under the carpet.  With complete resolution to stare clear of cut throat headliners that has gripped the world; the B that is now a C. Am more amazed by the surge of accolades that presided it. In all that has littered our screens of late, nothing brought my stoic grandma more stock than when I had to grammatically break down every ‘new’ word added to our ever growing vocabulary, most certainly my native language wasn’t quite hitting home. She, a relic, a mzee coming from a different era, a certain some-what sane times when M looked, remained an M (get the lingo now? So beaut!) Keenly listened, so dazed.
The world is radically changing, switching gears, chasing trends. Whatever the terminology the message is clear. Ironically all things gets a pass under the sun. Amidst technology being no longer a novelty, television being a bad learning tool, Barbie and Disney princesses now causes for poor self-esteem; we have gone bunkers. Downright formulatic and bland now as opposed to medieval times when no one gets reprimanded but is outrightly stricken down if found otherwise. Pop culture has quietly nabbed us off of the little stint we had to a genealogy; a faux-pax to our own identity. Coining words so intelligently to categorize a type and garner a bunch is one angle am still aloof at. I can’t lie it’s so exhausting striding along ,at the slightest not to come off as offensive or insensitive or less endeared where each and all seemed to have pitched and carved its own niche.

Life in Grandma’s time was simple! Less abominable to say the least. What humours me was her innocence and sheer ignorance which seemed to be so lost upon us and content to her. To trade them for a glimpse of the unknown was a tall order. One she wasn’t ready to pawn off.  But she couldn’t possibly understand the tons of knowledge lying fallow on the internet, the techno-savvy ways our life has been made easy or the joys we derive in sharing photo shopped beauty and creating false impressions of our persona. All she tagged as ’vain’ but that might just be how we thrive as its most akin to us. She’s lived her time but I am yet to; so to totally critique it as completely meaningless and vain will be highly mistaken. Inevitably contagious. Truth will be to regard  & render all not so believable at the initial, finding knowledge in the difference and adopting that mechanism for survival.

However, my mantra still reads ‘I am of the world but not for the world’, that I buff my chest and confidently acknowledge. Carefully choosing true paths & sieving through the mesh of lots of values and morals, clinching solely unto the ones that enables me to remain pure and uncompromising. Having an identity where age-long wisdom still shapes my mentality and words of old has a place and holds water, where non-conformity & ingenuity neither denigrates my soul  but instead creates neutral grounds where I can converse with airs of confident and give my true opinion and not shy away behind curtains of cheesy views for fear of isolation.

  1. Truly the world's moving at a faster pace than ever. A good example is the art of letter writing....(insert your tech gadget here). We would rather be online than be outside enjoying face to face conversations. It is dire times no doubt. But these are the times we live in, and we need to move with change.
